Vote Liberal Democrat for a fair deal.

Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to elect a strong local champion who will fight for a fair deal for you and your community.

A fair deal where everyone can afford a decent home somewhere safe and clean – with a comfortable retirement when the time comes.

A fair deal where every child can go to a good school and have real opportunities to fulfil their potential.

A fair deal where everyone can get the high-quality healthcare they need, when they need it and where they need it.

That is the fair deal the Liberal Democrats are fighting for.

  • A list of all the Lib Dem candidates standing for election in Portsmouth will be available on this website in the run up to each election.

  • You can register to vote online on GOV.UK.

This is a government website and the online form only takes a few minutes to complete. You will need to have your national insurance number to hand to complete the process. Each person should complete the online form individually.

  • British citizens, Irish citizens and qualifying Commonwealth citizens (including those from Cyprus and Malta) can register to vote in all elections.

You can register to vote at 16, but you can’t vote until you’re 18.

Citizens of other EU member states resident in the UK can vote in local government elections but not in UK Parliamentary elections.

  • If you’re registered to vote you will receive a poll card shortly before an election. This will tell you where your polling station is, what day the election is being held and other election information. Your polling station is most likely be a church hall, community centre or school near where you live. If you’re unsure which polling station you should go to, please use this guide.

  • Polling station staff will be on hand to greet you and invite you in as soon as polls open at 7am. You will need to state your name and address and show your photo ID to staff. The staff will give you a ballot paper listing who you can vote for. Depending on the elections taking place in your area, you may have more than one ballot paper to complete. Take your ballot paper into a polling booth. There will be a shelf for you to lean and write on.

Outside the polling station you may be greeted by a teller, a volunteer from a political party. You don't need to give the tellers any information, but if you let the Lib Dem teller know your polling number or address we can make sure we don't knock on your door later in the day - freeing our campaign volunteers to speak to other voters.

  • You shouldn’t take photos inside the polling station as it might put the secrecy of the ballot at risk.

You are more than welcome to take photos outside the polling station and share them on social media to encourage your friends and family to vote. If there's tellers at your polling station they'll normally be happy to take a photo on your phone if you ask them. If you do post the photos on social media, we'd love you to tag us and use #VoteLibDem.

  • If you are unable to get to your polling station on polling day you can apply to vote by post, or you can appoint someone to vote on your behalf as proxy. You can request a postal vote application form here.

  • Voters must show a form of photo ID when voting at a polling station. Only certain types of photo ID may be used:

    • A passport issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, a British Overseas territory, an EEA state or a Commonwealth country
    • A driving licence issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or an EEA member state (or a provisional licence)
    • A biometric immigration document
    • A national identity card issued by an EEA state
    • An Older Person’s Bus Pass
    • A Disabled Person’s Bus Pass
    • A Blue Badge
    • An identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card)
    • A Ministry of Defence Form 90 (Defence Identity Card)

Voters without one of the accepted types of ID can apply for a free voter authority certificate from the Government. This can be used when voting at a polling station. If you want to apply for a voter authority certificate to use at a particular election, the deadline to apply is 5pm six working days before the date of that election. If you know someone who can’t apply for a voter authority certificate online, they can call Portsmouth City Council on 023 9283 4074.

You can find more information about elections in Portsmouth on the Portsmouth City Council website.

If you would like to speak to someone from the Council's Electoral Services team you can call them on 023 9283 4074 or email them on elections@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
