Stop Sewage Dumping in Southsea
In 2025, Southern Water dumped sewage into our rivers and seas for almost 115,000 hours across nearly 1,000 discharges.
In 2026, they have even been dumping sewage during record-breaking dry weather. Sewage dumping during dry weather is often illegal.
Portsmouth swimmers, surfers and other beach and sea users have made clear that isn’t good enough. The scandal of sewage being poured into our seas is getting much worse than we dared imagine, with no effective action being taken by the government.
“The Labour Government has the power to take real action, now. It just chooses not to. Instead, they want quick headlines and photo opps.” explains Lib Dem Charlie Murphy.
Water companies like Southern Water are raising bills while asking taxpayers to pick up the tab again for infrastructure investment. It's time to break up the racket of water companies and run them in the public interest, not for shareholders.
Charlie Murphy, Portsmouth campaigner
Before the last General Election Labour MPs, including our Labour MP in Portsmouth South, voted with the Conservatives against harsher measures on water companies.
In Government, Labour ministers have dodged structural change in the water industry. We need real change to fix the system and stop the sewage dumping scandal for good.
Stop The Sewage!
We want the government to stop companies like Southern Water polluting our seas, making us sick, wrecking our environment and charging us for the privilege.
