Cleaner Streets for Southsea
I don’t report every litter or rubbish issue that I deal with but I thought this one was worth sharing.
As the most densely populated part of the city (some say the country!) some excess waste and fly-tipping is inevitable in our area - especially at the end of term in some student houses,
I am always grateful for the residents who report these issues:
- by using the Council's My Portsmouth app,
- by calling the City Helpdesk on 023 9283 4092,
- or by emailing me at Cllr.Suzy.Horton@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
What’s really important is that the council is responsive when these reports come in, as well as working proactively to stop them re-occurring.
So I was pleased to get this email within a few hours of a resident alerting me to a problem on bin day:
Dear Suzy
A Waste Management Officer came yesterday and dealt with the rubbish issue. All excess refuse bags were removed and litter pick actioned around the affected area.
The residents were spoken to with the aim of limiting this type of occurrence happening moving forward.
The officer noted the recycle bins were contaminated with the wrong items. This would stop the bin from being emptied. Therefore, all contamination was cleared.
The managing agent was traced and contacted, emphasizing the household has a responsibility to present their waste correctly. The Agent will follow up and speak directly with their tenants.
Together with removing bins from the streets from some roads (Suzy edit: This will be rolled out across the whole area) the streets are looking cleaner and less cluttered.

You can see why when I read this, I was so pleased.
So thanks again for doing your bit to help, whether that’s keeping your street tidy or reporting issues (not just posting about it on social media!)
We do appreciate it and it really helps make our community better.
