Stop Aquind

Let's ‘Stop Aquind’ from tearing up our coast with their proposed interconnector

Controversial plans to tear up parts of Portsmouth with an interconenctor have been proposed by Aquind. The Lib Dems are backing local campaigners to put an end to these devasting plans.

For years locals have been campaign with political parties, national and local politicans and other community groups to 'Stop Aquind'. The Liberal Democrats are lending any and all help we can to put an end to the these plans. The Lib Dem-led City Council have already ring-fenced £250,000 to help local campaigners put an end to the plans and put pressure on the Government to reject them.

This would be a really damaging for Portsmouth if it goes ahead and I'm glad people from across the political divide are coming together to try and put and end to this project.

Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Councillor for Milton

“One thing that has worked well is that we have worked across the parties. Penny Mordaunt MP has campaigned within government, Stephen Morgan MP has campaigned from the opposition side and we're a Lib Dem council and we're paying for the lawyers and helping the local response,” says Cllr Vernon-Jackson.

It is interesting that the French government doesn’t want the interconnector on a list of projects the EU supports. If it’s not going to happen in France then it’s a dead duck. The Lib Dem-led Council has talked to people in Caen to try get a meeting together of decision makers in France, to understand what their position is. There is a feeling that the French are not keen on the Aquind project.
