Three reasons why everyone should love buses in Portsmouth
We proud that local bus services have got better over the past few years - that's why Portsmouth won gold at the National Bus Awards in 2024.
In fact, buses are a real Pompey success story. One that reflects ambition from our Lib Dem-led Council, a practical focus on what really matters, and our city coming together.
The improvementsthat your Lib Dem team have championed include:
- New electric buses, using improved bus stops with real time information boards
- New rotes like the number 19 service to Ocean Retail Park
- More frequent and more reliable services, like the number 18 which now runs every 20 minutes during the week.
As a result of these improvements the number of bus journeys taken in our city went up nearly 20% in 2024 - and we're expecting more growth this year.
This growth in bus use and our ongoing investment in our buses is good news for all of us.
I'm proud that local bus services have got better over the past few years, thanks to vision from your local Lib Dems and investment from your Lib Dem-led council. When I talk to car drivers in our city, they often tell me that they're glad to see bus use go up - but sometimes they ask me they benefit from these improvements, and I'm pleased to share with them the ways that better buses helps them.
Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport
The practical solutions driven forward by Lib Dems in Portsmouth for better buses come from our belief that we all benefit from improved services - even if you don't travel by bus.
- Buses help cut air pollution, improving the quality of life for everyone.
- Buses can save you time and money on some trips, such as shopping in the city centre our visiting our beautiful seafront - without needing to find and pay for parking.
- Buses, including our Park & Ride service, are great for touring and our economy. (The Council's Summer Park & Ride means a family can travel all the way from Tipner to Southsea Castle for just £4.)
- With more people using buses, there's fewer vehicles on the road - and that means less congestion and easier parking.
Portsmouth's Lib Dem-led council care about delivering on what really matters in everyday life. That's competence and care - a pretty strong combination for good local government.
