Portsmouth Residents Prepare for VE Day Celebrations
As the nation prepares to celebrate 80 years since Victory in Europe Day next month, Lib Dem-led Portsmouth City Council are pleased that 32 street parties will be held across the VE Day weekend (3 - 5 May).
As the home of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth has always had a connection with those who serve. As we commemorate VE Day and the sacrifice by so many in the Second World War, and in other conflicts before and since, to protect the values that bind our community, it is right that we come together a community and a city to celebrate our freedom and the ongoing dedication of the Royal Navy and the British armed forces.
Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Deputy Lord Mayor of Portsmouth
Taking part during the national VE Day 80 celebration, these street parties have been made possible by Lib Dem-led Portsmouth City Council who are covering the cost of public liability insurance and road closures for the parties, lifting the financial barrier to the community coming together.
A full list of the street parties, including dates and times, can be found on the Portsmouth City Council website.
