Portsmouth Lib Dems: we’ll fight to make sure Local Elections go ahead in Portsmouth!
Portsmouth’s Liberal Democrats have confirmed that they will proceed with next May’s local elections, and won’t take up the Government’s anti-democratic offer to postpone them. This comes after the Government announced some areas of the country might be allowed to postpone their elections for a second year in a row.
Commenting, Steve Pitt, Lib Dem Leader of the Council, said:
“Regardless of what Tory and Labour councils may do, the Liberal Democrats will fight to make sure that local people in Portsmouth get their say in next year’s local elections.
“We think that local elections shouldn’t be postponed anywhere in the country. Local people having their say is far more important than this Labour Government’s unnecessary reorganisation of local government. The Tories and Labour are clearly running scared of the voters they’ve failed.
“Our message remains the same: Hands off and let Portsmouth vote!
