The Government has gave into a Lib Dem campaign in parliament to end taxpayers' money going into companies who are not stopping the sewage discharge.
This is a victory for millions of people across the country who have voiced their outrage at water companies being allowed to get away with polluting river and coastlines.
This means public money can only fund water companies like Southern Water if they produce a costed and timed plan for ending sewage dumping into rivers.
This is a great victory in the fight to end sewage dumping.
Despite this win, the the Government is still refusing to ban sewage discharges into swimming water, like Southsea.
The Government are also refusing to ban water company CEOs rewarding themselves with bonuses whilst this environmental scandal happens.
The fight continues and we'll keep holding the Government to account.
This week, 292 Conservative MPs voted to allow sewage dumping by water companies in our coasts and rivers for at least 15 more years. In the last two years alone, water companies in England dumped raw sewage 775,568 times over 5,768,679 hours. The new regulations would permit dumping to continue for 15 more years.
