Suzy Horton - Central Southsea Ward

Elected May 2015. Re-elected in May 2019.

Suzy was born in Portsmouth and comes from a Portsmouth family going back many generations. Her grandmother (100 years old) lived in Suzy’s ward in Harold Road. Growing up, Suzy had many part-time jobs, including being a lifeguard at The Pyramids Centre and working as an 8 foot turquoise octopus at the Sea Life Centre (now Blue Reef Aquarium)!

Suzy’s entire career has been in Education; as a Primary school teacher and Deputy Head, doing teacher and teaching assistant training, as a lecturer at Portsmouth University, where she still works, and currently as Portsmouth’s Cabinet Member for Education. The transformation that education can bring is at the heart of what Suzy does.

Suzy loves being a councillor. She is well known in her ward as she keeps in contact throughout the year, every year, both responding to residents who have problems but also engaging with them to improve the area. This has lead to safer crossings, clearing up eyesores, planting more trees, traffic calming, Speedwatch sessions, more bike racks and Christmas lights, to name a few things.

In only 10 months of being in charge of education in the city, Suzy has visited almost 75% of schools to find out what the achievements and challenges. She has lead on an attendance campaign, spoken up against school cuts and put Special Educational Needs and mental health high up the agenda.

Suzy has many more plans for the next few years, both locally in Central Southsea and for schools across the city and is excited to see them come to fruition.

There’s not a lot of free time for Suzy nowadays but her favourite things to do are cheering on Pompey (season ticket holder for many decades), baking cakes and sitting with a cuppa catching up with friends or her Nan.
