Duncan is our candidate for Drayton & Farlington Ward in the 2021 local elections.
Duncan has lived in Portsmouth for over thirty years, having been born and raised in the North East (Redcar).
Duncan has been a supporter of the Liberal Democrats since the party's inception and has chosen now to step forward and get more involved by standing as a local elections candidate because of a lifelong sense of duty. His long and varied experience will allow him to really contribute to the running of Portsmouth City Council. His appetite for community work will benefit him when undertaking the day-to-day work of a councillor.
He is a Chartered Chemical Engineer with an honours degree in the subject from Loughborough University of Technology. He followed this up with a Master of Science in Computing for Commerce and Industry from the Open University.
He worked as a process control engineer for Foxboro (now Schneider Electric) and John Brown Constructors and Engineers for over ten years. During that time he gained insight into major projects in the oil, gas, pharmaceutical, food, nuclear and paper industries.
Since leaving John Brown, he has specialised in more conventional software projects. He was a self-employed software consultant for ten years. He then returned to conventional employment as a programmer developing websites and backend systems for the motor industry.
He is currently employed as a programmer for a major email marketing company.
Duncan was a stalwart of Purbrook Cricket Club for over twenty years. He combined stubborn opening batting with hard work on the committee. He was a qualified cricket coach who was very active at both club and district levels.
He wrote the results system which was used by the Hampshire Cricket League for a decade and continued to be used by one of the colts districts until Covid hit. In fact, lockdown broke a run of twenty one years in which Duncan made a voluntary contribution to colts cricket in Hampshire.
In the last ten years Duncan has completed three sponsored cycle rides in aid of Rowans Hospice. He completed London to Brighton once and the Ruby Ride twice. His second Ruby Ride raised over £600.
Duncan and his partner, Carol, have been together for seventeen years.
