Local Lib Dems have backed the first ‘Pedal Portsmouth’ city bike ride which saw an estimated 3000 cyclists to have the roads to themselves for a few hours on an exceptionally sunny September day.
Councillor Suzy Horton was one of the first at the start of the ride to show her support. She commented, “When I was a child growing up in Portsmouth, we were out on our bikes all day. Unfortunately, nowadays there is so much traffic around that children don’t get to go out so much and this may prevent them from being the cyclists of the future.”
Steve Pitt, Lib Dem campaigner in Central Southsea, added, “This fun community event highlights important issues around safety for cyclists as well as fitness and healthy living. Portsmouth is a perfect city for cycling and experiences like this really help to encourage people to get back on their bikes.”
