Council Leader supports Black Lives Matter

Portsmouth City Council Leader, Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson made a statement yesterday in support of the movement to bring justice and equality for black communities, Black Lives Matter.

We must build a fair, free and open society. We must balance the needs for liberty, equality & community. The despicable murder of George Floyd by a police officer should chill and frighten us all. Black men and women deserve to be able to walk the streets in peace without fear of targeting, arrest, harassment or murder from the very people that are meant to be protecting communities.

Furthermore, I am disturbed to see recent inflammatory and racist posts shared by a councillor in this city. This must and will be investigated fully. We must ensure that those seeking to represent us do not share such distasteful, and indefensible views.

"Unfortunately I have not been able to join the protest today in the Guildhall Square as I am shielding to protect my husband John who is in a vulnerable group."

Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson
Leader Portsmouth City Council
