The Government is forcing Portsmouth to make provision for 17,000 new homes over the next twenty years. That’s about six twenty-storey tower blocks worth of new housing EVERY year for the next two decades.
We need more housing here of the right quality, that people can afford – but what we can’t sustain are centrally imposed housing targets that threaten the very communities and cherished green spaces we love.
If Portsmouth Council does not meet this target, the government can take away planning decisions from councillors you can hold to account, and make those decisions elsewhere.
I think decisions about the future of Portsmouth, about your neighbourhood, about your street, are best made by those accountable to you, the residents.
