Keep the Yomper in Eastney

The Royal Marine's Museum is closing this spring and a local petition, run by local residents, has collected over 5,000 signatures (online & offline) to keep the Yomper (a statue of a Royal Marine from the Falklands conflict) in Eastney. The petition can be found at: https://www.change.org/p/professor-dominic-tweddle-keep-the-yomper-on-our-seafront.

Local Lib Dem councillor Matthew Winnington and campaigners Tracy McClure & Terry Hall have been supporting the campaign to keep the Yomper statue outside the Royal Marine's Museum on the seafront in Eastney. Tracy commented: "I'm a member of a Forces family and know how important the Yomper is to Eastney seafront. The council must find a way of sustaining the Yomper where it is."

There are fears that the statue will leave Eastney when the museum moves into the Historic Dockyard. As local Lib Dem councillors, we put forward a proposal to maintain the Yomper where it is but this was unfortunately voted down by Conservative and UKIP councillors.

The Local Lib Dem team will continue to keep people updated as the campaign progresses
