Delwar Baig is the Liberal Democrat candidate for Drayton & Farlington Ward in the 2019 local elections.
Delwar moved to the UK from Bangladesh in 1980 and settled in Portsmouth 10 year later in 1991. Delwar and his wife live on Guildford Road and they have 3 grown up daughters who are now all married and moved away from home. Delwar has worked in multiple industries but has often returned to the restaurant business.
Delwar joined the Liberal Democrats because of how much help and support local Lib Dem councillors in Portsmouth have provided for the Bangladeshi community over the years. He is keen to now be part of providing that same help to others.
Delwar is active in the community including founding the Sylhet District Association in 2004, he helped to set up the local Bengali Community Association in 2012, and he was active at the start of the Madani Academy. Delwar was also instrumental in introducing the Community Award as part of the local Bangladeshi Welfare Association to recognise the positive contributions of Bangladeshi people to their local community. He is also the local coordinator for the charity One Pound Hospital and is a trustee of the Probashi Balaganj-Osmaninagar Education Trust.
