A new on street cycle park has been put in outside Craneswater School. This should be good news for cyclists but unfortunately it's not being used.
It's in the wrong place.
The council was told this by the Portsmouth Cycle Forum, local traders and local Eastney and Craneswater Lib Dem Councillor Matthew Winnington who was working with the Cycle Forum and local traders to highlight sites to the council to put in on-street cycle parking as a pilot. The placing of this cycle park was done without any consultation with the Cycle Forum or traders.
Councillor Winnington commented: "I'm now really worried about what this might mean for the future of decent cycle parking in the city. It almost seems that this has been set up to fail so no more new, improved cycle parking places will be created. As with the Conservative administration's lip service paid to the Portsmouth Cycle Forum's 'A City to Share' document which is aimed to make our city a healthier, less polluted and less congested place to live, I fear that improved cycle parking will go the same way. More people will continue to use their cars when they don't need to because there's not the parking needed for bikes in the right places.'
Matthew Winnington will continue to work with local traders, local residents, the Cycle Forum and his Lib Dem colleagues to get the City Council to make good on its word and improve cycle parking.
"The Council needs to listen, the last two years have shown so many mistakes because the Conservative administration have ignored what residents, businesses and local organisations are telling them," added Councillor Winnington.
