Year after year the popular grass tennis courts at Canoe Lake looked like they might close due to cuts by Whitehall politicians; so local Lib Dems set out to find a better and more sustainable way to keep them open, make improvements and deliver a new smart healthy foods cafe that Southsea Canoe Lake visitors and local residents were asking for.
The then Lib Dem-run Council advertised the land comprising the grass-courts, redundant bowls greens, pavilions and nearby ball courts looking for new ways to breathe new life into the area. After considering bids a lease was granted to a local entrepreneur.
Thanks to considerable new investment the summer grass courts will continue, 4 new all-weather tennis courts have been created and the former 'ladies pavilion' is now the busy and smart 'Greens Cafe' with lots of healthy food options as well as delicious cakes and beverages.
Cllr Lee Hunt (Lib Dem Central Southsea Ward) who oversaw the process from start to finish said, "The Lib Dems Seafront Plan is delivering; in this one new business alone there are five new full-time jobs with several part-time jobs."
He added, "Local council taxpayers are also saving over £60,000 a year and local facilities have been improved all at the same time. "Along with other many other new seafront businesses it proves how partnership working and smart-thinking really works for everyone."
